I am not a thrift shop bargain hunter by nature. When I stopped
into the local sharing center looking for old wool sweaters to felt and found
the following treasure, my visits to our local thrifts stores may increase in
frequency.
I picked up these hand stitched linens, needlepoint pillow, an envelope of knitting notions (can’t have enough of those), and an old pair of brass tipped needles all for the enormous sum of $1.89.
I washed the linens. Included were a couple of damask glass towels, 3 embroidered fingertip towels, a fine hankie with the letter “M” embroidered in a corner and a little table cloth. They have been ironed, stored in the linen drawer, and will be put to good use.
I have been admiring the bracelets that this Australian site has for sale. I thought that I would try my hand at bending the needles into circles. I boiled water and wrapped them around a rolling pin and secured them with rubber bands, all with great success. I wore them the next day and received a few compliments. Great. That afternoon I started to take them off and the broke into several pieces. Not great.
My other finds are of the human kind. Tom Terrific received
a mystery invitation for a wedding in Coral
Springs for a cousin that he hadn’t seen in 40 years. He
made contact and found out that several other members of his family were
attending. He has not seen any of them
since middle school and we went not knowing what to expect. What we found was a
wonderful and diverse group of family, many now living in
Florida, all interesting and fun to be with.
We left wanting more! The weekend was better than any present one could find
under the Christmas tree. I am thankful for the gift of a family.
I had to post a photo of the “neglected” orchids that adorn the pool area of the brides’ house. My orchids will now receive the same neglect.
